Chamber Music Amici
Tango and More
Sunday February 26, 2017 2:00 PM
We hope you can join us for this exciting afternoon of chamber music featuring Chamber Music Amici one of the Pacific Northwest’s premier chamber ensembles. Guest artists Lillie Manis and Valerie Nelson (both violinists) will join Amici regulars violist Jessica Lambert, cellist Steve Pologe, and pianist Victor Steinhardt.
Tango and More
Turina, Piano Trio No. 2 in B Minor
Steinhardt, Tango and Scherzo
Lee, Morango...Almost a Tango
Piazzolla, La Muerte del Angel
Schulhoff, Five Pieces for String Quartet
The program opens with a composition that reveals the influence of French Impressionism, melodic vocabulary, and rhythmic patterns of Turina’s Spanish heritage. Inspiration from a postcard depicting Argentinian tango dancers led to Steinhardt’s Tango and Scherzo. Lee’s composition was originally a bar jazz tune, rewritten for the Kronos Quartet, and later reborn again as a bastardized version of the real thing. Piazzola’s style, nuevo tango, a fusion of traditional tango, classical music and jazz, is shown off in this tribute to an angel who descends to Buenos Aires to help heal the spirits but is killed in a knife fight. Schulhoff’s passion for dancing led to this Neo-Baroque dance suite inspired by five different styles of dance music.
