Travel Lane County has a wine tasting every Tuesday evening featuring a Lane County winery. This is a great opportunity to get to know the people involved and for the regional folk to discover what is waiting in their own back yard!
Easy to find, the Adventure Center is right across the lot from Best Buy. Big sign, can't miss it!

Elkton Just for Fun...and Wine
Today I returned a few pieces to an artist in Roseburg and I meant to make it a fast trip, then I saw the Elkton sign.
Last auction I never made it to Elkton and therefore, never ask for One Bottle from any of the wonderful wineries hidden half way to the coast. I got there just before eleven and stopped by the local deli/restaurant Tomaselli's Pastry Mill and Cafe. I ordered a sandwich and was very pleased and surprised to find that they had NO COKE or PEPSI products, only VERY good natural sodas, and of course, wine. I enjoyed a visit with the owner, Marty, and after I finished my meal I crossed the street to Brandborg Winery where I was treated to a full tasting of their many wines. All were very drinkable but the 07 Riesling , the 07 Gewürztraminer were out of this world! Both got 90+ in Wine Enthusiast. Sue was a very gracious host and promised "One Bottle" for the project. It was in the 90's so I will wait to pick up their offering until I have my cooler in the car.
While I was tasting a couple of women walked in and said that they were working on a "special project" that sounded very intriguing. I told them they were more than welcome to us
e my blog and it's many meager entries in any way they felt appropriate. I met Sherry and her friend (taster) again at the next stop, River's Edge Winery.
Michael Landt offered me tastes of the current vintages and I was more that a little impressed by both the wine AND the prices! I think the 07 Barrel Select Pinot Noir was my favorite. Though "thinner" than the 06 or 05, it had a very front of the mouth pepper, Bing cherry, and annis that finished with soft fruit and a very nice mouth feel. All the wines were good but I was blown away by the Dulcet Cuvee'. This one you have to come and taste. "The 2006 Dulcet Cuvee' has a delightful tobacco scent in the bouquet, candied cherry flavor, and surprisingly smooth finish for a wine with 16.4% alcohol." to Quote from their web page.
He also promised a bottle, the 2007 Barrel Select Pinot Noir.
I was running late so I missed a stop at Bradley Vineyards but will see them next time.
I had to get to Henry Estate and drop of art so I took 138 toward Sutherlin. Nice drive on a summer's day! At Henry Estate I met a nice young couple and their dog, who was determined to get inside to visit the local boss(pictured here).
The Wine was great, as usual, and I did a quick taste of the Pinot Gris, peachy and aromatic, and the 06 Pinot Noir,lots of sweet fruit and ripe black cherry with a hint of mint and earth
Both are worth a second taste and I will be back to walk through the wonderfully inviting front door. They promised another bottle for the auction on April 9th.

New Auction Items to Go With the Wine
Last night at First Friday I ask for some special gifts for our auction and got more than I could have imagined!
You may bid on becoming a character in the world famous cartoon series, "Stone Soup" created by Jan Eliot. She will create a "you" in one of her published strips and you will get to travel the world on the pages of hundreds of newspapers, in many languages and be seen by millions of readers!
Justin King will play a private concert in the Barrel room of King Estate, where he began to play his guitar as a young boy!
Jerry Dame , one of Oregon's most renowned artists, will work with you to create an oil painting of your choice from his vast repertoire!
And there is much more to add to the list!
April 10th will be quite a night!

Certificate vs Bottles
I think we need to have a few gift certificates mixed among the bottles in each region to encourage people to go to the wineries and spend some time tasting the other wines they offered and explore the other wineries..
Setting that president is Melrose Vineyards in the Umpqua region. They have graciously given a certificate for a bottle of 06 Pinotage. This is a wine found almost exclusively in South Africa and it has very unique qualities. Linda and I had dinner in Amsterdam at Puri Mas and when I ask for a wine to go with the spicy food, the waiter came out with a red...."Oh?' ask I " and what would THIS be?" He smiled and told us about Pinotage, the way it is grown, and why they serve it with spiced foods. Chilled a bit to around 52 degrees, it takes on an astounding quality. It approaches the spice and instead of masking it as some big reds would, it enhances the subtle flavors and enjoys the contest without trying to win. Needless to say I was excited when Melrose uncorked a bottle for me to try. VERY big fruit nose! More subtle ion the pallet. A keeper that will be good for at least 5 years if you can control yourself.
So look for some paper in your cases of wine you bid on and you may discover a real treat!

A short but productive trip
Today I went on a short drive up Terroirtorial Road through the Southern Willamette Valley wine country and picked up a 2005 Blue Dot Pinot Noir from Pfeiffer Vineyard. I have this wine in my collection and was VERY happy to get one for the auction. Truly one of the best! I then stopped by Benton Lane (shown here) and picked up the 2007 Estate grown Pinot Noir. Still in bottle shock but lively and luscious with lots of aroma of strawberry with chocolate layered in . On the palate, it exhibits cherry flavors with red licorice. I stopped by Broadley in Monroe on the off chance that they would be there and my bet paid off with a bottle of the 2007 Shea Pinot Noir! That is Morgan with the wine.
I, like most men, hate to turn around, so I drove on to Corvallis and visited with Jerry at Wineopolis at 151 NW Monroe. As I walked in I was met by John Bacon who, with Jane Smith, is responsible for Nuthatch Cellars. Their wine was sold off the shelves so he is bringing down another for me. Jerry gave me a bottle of 3 Fools. This one is their Del Rio Reds and it will be a real treat to whoever gets it!
